Critics Review
“In all Mairi Hedderwick books the illustrative detail is exquisite-witty and absorbing-enriching the plot.”
This is not only a charming story about a little girl’s woes but it is also a fascinating portrait of life on a small Scottish Island … Children will enjoy looking at the detailed illustrations and trying to figure out Katie’s riddles for themselves * Through the Looking Glass *
About The Author
Mairi Hedderwick
Mairi Hedderwick, a graduate of Edinburgh College of Art, was a teacher before becoming a children’s book illustrator. She is the author and illustrator of the popular Katie Morag series, created in 1984. Katie Morag’s home on the fictional Hebridean island of Struay is inspired by Hedderwick’s lifelong association with the Isle of Coll. In 2013, Katie Morag was adapted into a successful TV series on Cbeebies.
Mairi Hedderwick has also written and illustrated many other books for children and adults, all set against the backdrop of the Highlands and Islands. She received an Honorary Degree from Stirling University in 2003 for her outstanding contribution to writing and illustration in Scotland, especially for children.
Her illustrated adult books include An Eye on the Hebrides, a record of a six-month journey through the islands on the west of Scotland; Highland Journey, following the footsteps of Victorian writer and artist John T Reid; Sea Change, logging the passage of a 26ft vintage yacht from east to west coast Scotland via the Caledonian canal; Shetland Rambles, her latest illustrated personal journey, once more in tandem with John T Reid; and The Last Laird of Coll, a memoir of Kenneth Stewart, the last laird of Coll.
