About The Author
Mark Willacy
Mark Willacy is an award-winning journalist with over 25 years of experience. He has reported for the ABC from more than 30 countries.
Willacy is a seven-time Walkley Award winner. In 2020, he received Australia’s highest journalism honour, the Gold Walkley, for his exposé on alleged Australian SAS war crimes in Afghanistan. His report, “Killing Field,” garnered international attention and initiated a federal police war crimes investigation. Willacy’s investigations contributed evidence to 12 cases detailed in the Brereton Report, an independent inquiry into war crimes in Afghanistan.
During his four years as the ABC’s Middle East correspondent, Willacy covered the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the 2003 Iraq War. He also served as the Japan correspondent in 2011, reporting on the country’s devastating earthquake.
Willacy has been named Queensland Journalist of the Year twice. In 2019, he won a Logie Award for his Four Corners report on the Thai cave rescue.
