Critic Reviews

“William Tyndale is the only writer in the English language more influential than William Shakespeare. Melvyn Bragg, with his unique view of the broad sweep of social and cultural history, understands this in all its many dimensions. He succinctly lays out the details of Tyndale's life, achievements and legacy, and vividly shows us the man's genius, his passion and his "heroic innocence" in the face of Henry VIII's tyranny. Thus he humanizes the story of the English and their Bible. In short, it is one of the greatest stories of individual sacrifice for the greater good in the history of the world.”

"Bragg has established himself over the past decades as a fearlessly dedicated, popular educator.', The Sunday Times;'Our most trusted intellectual interpreter.', Evening Standard';It's is a terrific read, and really hits the spot - everything the non-specialist needs to know in a readily accessible format.', John Guy;'Eloquent...brilliant and very moving.', Paul Cartledge, Emeritus Professor of Greek culture, University of Cambridge;'An enjoyably pacey read.', Times Literary Supplement"

More on this Book

Within four years of William Tyndale's execution in 1536, Henry VIII had authorized the Great Bible for the Church of England, based on Tyndale's work to create an English translation of the Bible that was accessible for everyone to read. This Tyndale Bible, as it became known, was key in the spread of Reformation ideas across the English-speaking world, and its legacy can still be felt in translations of the Bible today. But who was William Tyndale? What inspired his great endeavor, and how did the work of a condemned heretic become so influential? Writer and broadcaster Melvyn Bragg invites you to explore the life and times of William Tyndale, how his legacy was formed and why it has lasted until the twenty-first century. The Very Brief History has a chronology at the front plus a glossary of key terms and a list of further reading at the back.
