Mike Artell

Mike Artell is an award-winning children’s book author, illustrator, and television cartoonist. His work spans nationally recognized lift-the-flap board books for very young children and non-fiction books for older children. He has also authored and illustrated teacher and parent resource books on topics such as ecology, parties, drawing, and young authorship.

In addition to his writing and illustrating, Mike’s diverse experience includes:

  • Musician: Plays guitar, bass, keyboard, and blues harmonica.
  • Storyteller: Regularly performs original poems and tales.
  • Editorial Cartoonist: Previously worked as a newspaper editorial cartoonist.
  • Writer and Cartoonist: Created content for magazines and greeting cards.
  • Keynote Speaker: Addresses major educational conferences.
  • Marketing Consultant: Served on boards for several high-technology companies.
  • Television Host: Hosted his own television cartooning show.

Each year, Mike engages with thousands of students nationwide, sharing his books and teaching writing and drawing techniques. He typically writes and illustrates two books annually, conducts six teacher workshops, speaks at ten educational conferences, and visits six libraries or children’s museums.

Mike also leads “author/illustrator in residence” programs at schools, personally guiding over 4,000 students in creating their own picture books. This work earned him recognition from the Northshore (LA) chapter of the International Reading Association for “exemplary service in the promotion of literacy.”

Several of Mike’s books have received awards. His children’s astronomy book, Starry Skies, was named a 1998 Best Science Book For Children by Science Books and Films magazine. His books have also been honored as “Pick of the Lists” by Publisher’s Weekly, “Top 100” by Curriculum Administrator Magazine, and “Teacher’s Choice” by Learning Magazine.
