Naguib Mahfouz
Naguib Mahfouz was born in Cairo in 1911 and began writing at the age of seventeen. His nearly forty novels and hundreds of short stories explore a wide range of themes, from re-imagined ancient myths to nuanced observations of contemporary Egyptian politics and culture.
His most celebrated work is The Cairo Trilogy, a three-part novel comprising Palace Walk (1956), Palace of Desire (1957), and Sugar Street (1957). The trilogy chronicles the life of a Cairo family across three generations, from 1917 to 1952.
In 1988, Naguib Mahfouz became the first Arabic-language writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. He passed away in August 2006.
