Critics Review

Reading Black Creative Healing in the era of developing work that will create new narratives for Blackness and disability was timely for me. Part workbook, life reflections, and skills/honor building, Black Creative Healing reminds us that we - the living - have the responsibility and capability to reach back from the past and learn from our collective African Ancestors. Black Creative Healing should be on the bookshelf of every Black identifying person - the book that brings who we are and where we’re going into fuller view. – Vilissa Thompson LMSW, Writer, Speaker, and Activist
I strongly recommend Black Creative Healing for anyone who wants to gain a deeper understanding of trauma’s impact and emerge triumphant because of it. I stand amazed at the impact of how much we don’t know about trauma can hurt us - from generations past up to the present. This book exposed me to many moments of awakening, sadness, healing and hope. It skilfully weaves history, self disclosure and research with introspective exercises that guide the reader. This is a brilliant text for equipping students and professionals of all cultures with invaluable information. A true work of art! – Dr. Deforia Lane, Music Therapy Consultant
Black Creative Healing invites readers to reflect on ancestry, personal history, and the body’s inner experiences. With a gentle tone, it encourages vulnerability at one’s own pace. Through storytelling, music, and sensory awareness, the book offers a perspective that deepens understanding of rhythm, connection, and the interconnected nature of life. – Dr. Erica V. Herrera, Doctor of Occupational Therapy, Hand specialist and co-author of Occupational Identity
Black Creative Healing is a powerful invitation to reclaim agency in our healing journeys. By weaving ancestral wisdom with reflective practice, Webb and Thomas help readers move beyond deficit-based frameworks toward personal and collective restoration. This timely, grounding book is both a balm and a resource for healing with intention. – Dr. Tyra M. Banks Assistant Professor, Director of Student Engagement and Belonging
A resonant workbook for healing that makes us sit up and pay attention to ourselves and our bodies in a way that is reminiscent of Menakem’s seminal work My Grandmother’s Hands. This is an essential guide to how BIPOC people experience the world and how it affects us; Webb and Thomas invite us to celebrate our creativity and allow the healing process to begin. – Davina Vencatasamy, Co-Founder of the ‘We Are Monster’ global music therapy network
