Critics Review
“A short circuit occurs when two currents to be kept apart meet, thus producing an explosive disturbance of the system. Gherovici’s book is such a short circuit, bringing together Lacanian psychoanalysis at the highest conceptual level and the concrete experience of social work among Puerto Ricans in Philadelphia. The result is breathtaking: the proof that top theory and engaged social experience need each other.” —Slavoj Žižek, author of The Sublime Object of Ideology
“Gherovici effortlessly breaks down Freudian and Lacanian concepts and grounds them in real-world scenes, vivid anecdotes, case histories. This is a fantastic resource for those interested in, or engaged with, Puerto Rican history and forms of resistance, but also for those interested in colonial resistance more broadly … And for those interested in what psychoanalysis can teach us about geopolitics and the social world. And for those interested in the mind. Which is all to say, this book, in all its specificity, is truly a book for everyone.” —From the foreword by Justin Torres, author of Blackouts and We the Animals
