Critics Review
“Dr. Angela Puca is a welcome and outstanding voice in occult studies. The Left-Hand Path of Magick brings the precision and rigor of an academic alongside the accessible and engaging style of an educator speaking to a wider audience. Puca clearly defines characteristics of the Left-Hand Path and her rationale for including the movements discussed in the book. Her greatest gift to readers is her nuanced, lucid treatment of often misunderstood and unfairly maligned practices. Anyone who reads this book will come away with a fresh perspective on the Left-Hand Path.”
—Richard Kaczynski, author of Perdurabo: The Life of Aleister Crowley, Mind over Magick: The Psychology of Ritual Magick, and others
“I appreciate Dr. Angela Puca’s level-headed and nuanced approach in The Left Hand Path of Magick. Her thoughtful writing delivers a careful overview of various traditions and their associated practices.”
—Maevius Lynn, author of The Holy Year of Thelema
“The Left-Hand Path of Magick serves as a reference for anyone interested not only in the Left-Hand Path’s history, practices, and traditions, but also for any occult scholar or witchcraft practitioner. Dr. Puca’s near encyclopedic knowledge is delivered clearly and succinctly, allowing the reader to arrive at their own conclusions and encouraging critical thinking and questioning, while also maintaining a conversational tone that is as enthralling as it is wise. Get two copies: one to highlight and write comments in and another for your personal library.”
—Cherry Parra, author of The Left-Hand Path of Tarot
“The Left-Hand Path of Magick is the finest overall survey yet of those aspects of the modern Western esoteric tradition which consist of magical self-fashioning that deliberately transgresses social norms. It is based on extensive research into all varieties of them, providing both a synthesis of existing knowledge and a major pioneering work of original research and packages everything in the most lucid and accessible style. In short, wonderful scholarship and a wonderful read.”
—Ronald Hutton, author of The Triumph of the Moon
“Beautifully lucid without oversimplifying, The Left-Hand Path of Magick brings clarity to a subject that is often obscured by misconceptions born of sensationalism. As expected, Dr. Angela Puca defines terms and recounts history, but she also provides the necessary context to help readers place the Left-Hand Path within the wider world of religious studies and the practical world of modern esoteric practices. Though her scholarship is rigorous, it is also engaging and accessible. In less capable hands, her subject could be reduced to easy assumptions. But Puca approaches her topic with care and a determination to provide genuine understanding to her readers. This is an invaluable resource for anyone who wants to understand the history and modern practices of the Left-Hand Path as they are, rather than as they have so often been imagined.”
—Dee Norman, author of The Seeker’s Guide to Grimoire Magic
“Rendering a definitive reference to the history of the Left-Hand Path is no small feat and Dr. Angela Puca has done just that. The Left-Hand Path of Magick does tremendous justice to a complex topic, all with a lucid and highly readable style. Perhaps for the first time there is a scholarly yet accessible treatment of the plurality of fringe and antinomian approaches to spirituality. Dr. Puca’s work will doubtlessly serve as a pillar to posterity and a beacon of light for oft-misunderstood traditions, delivering Left-Hand Path traditions from the obscurity of the absurd. With adept skill, Dr. Puca teaches us that we often fear what we don’t understand and that every path tread in the sincere intention of coming to self-knowledge is a path of both light and darkness.”
—Ike Baker, independent scholar and author of Ætheric Magic and Esoteric Mythology
“Dr. Angela Puca brings clarity and understanding to a subject too often clouded by misconception. The Left-Hand Path of Magick is an engaging and illuminating exploration of spiritual traditions that invites readers to look beyond assumptions and appreciate the rich diversity of human spiritual experience. This thoughtful and accessible work encourages curiosity, challenges assumptions, and offers readers a deeper appreciation for the many paths of spiritual exploration. An enlightening and valuable contribution to the study of esoteric spirituality.”
—Angie Buchanan, founder of Earth Traditions
“Drawing on both academic scholarship and contemporary magical practice, Angela Puca traces the Left-Hand Path from its Tantric roots through Thelema, Satanism, Luciferianism, Typhonian Magic, and modern occult movements. Along the way, she cuts through misconceptions without trying to sanitize or sensationalize the subject. Puca treats these traditions seriously, on their own terms, without requiring the reader to embrace or reject them. The Left-Hand Path of Magick is a map to some of the least-charted territory of the occult world, and I am thankful for it.”
—Jason Miller, author of Consorting with Spirits and Protection & Reversal Magick
