Plato
Plato (circa 428–348 BCE) was an ancient Greek philosopher, student of Socrates, and teacher of Aristotle. Born into an aristocratic Athenian family, he founded the Academy in Athens, one of the earliest known institutions of higher learning in the Western world. Plato preserved and expanded upon his mentor’s ideas through his famous written dialogues, using the character of Socrates to investigate profound questions about reality, knowledge, virtue, and governance. His philosophical framework laid the groundwork for Western philosophy, science, and political theory, and his extensive body of work continues to remain a vital cornerstone of global intellectual history.
