Robert Francis Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, has served as Pope of the Catholic Church since May 8, 2025, becoming the 267th pontiff. He is notable as the first Pope born in the United States and the first from the Order of Saint Augustine. He adopted the papal name Leo in homage to Pope Leo XIII, who was pope from 1878 to 1903 and was a strong advocate for labor rights.

Leo joined the Order of Saint Augustine as a friar in 1977 and was ordained a priest in 1982. Following a period of extensive missionary work in Peru, he became a bishop and later a naturalized citizen of Peru. He was elevated to the rank of cardinal by Pope Francis in 2023.
