Summary

Our modern standard of living depends on the transformation of energy from sources like fossil fuels, atomic nuclei, the sun, and wind into usable forms. This book examines the fundamental physics behind energy use that is crucial in our daily lives.

Amid widespread discussions about the potentially harmful and irreversible impact of CO₂ emissions on climate change, is the potential of renewable energy sources like solar and wind to replace fossil fuels. The Simple Physics of Ener…

Critics Review

Review from previous edition Rez takes a practical, physics-based approach to answering some of the most challenging questions about energy use and what we should be doing to increase sustainability, and provides a thorough quantitative analysis of the most important energy policy challenges we face. * Miriam R. Aczel, Contemporary Physics *
This is an excellent primer for readers with limited science backgrounds. Overall, it is an excellent resource for undergraduate courses on energy. * J. Tavakoli, CHOICE *
Despite the considerable breadth of the book, if we zoom in on specific topics, there is quite a bit of detail… Opening up to nearly any page, there is a pairing of the simple physics and its application, often with very specific examples. * Michael A. DuVernois, American Journal of Physics *

About The Author

Prof Peter Rez

Peter Rez received his undergraduate degree from Cambridge University and his doctorate from Oxford University. His expertise lies in the physics of electron and X-ray scattering, primarily applied to electron microscopy and spectroscopy, as well as radiation detectors and medical physics. He has also worked on modeling battery and other materials, which led to research on normal biomineralization, specifically the formation of calcite shells. Additionally, he has commented on societal issues influenced by physics, including the deployment of X-ray body scanners at airports and more recently on energy policy and climate science.
