What They're Saying

Critics Review

The book gradually shifts key, closing on radiant spreads in which light and shadow mix, and bravery comes from comforts and connections internalized. It’s a subtle look at coming to terms with one’s fears by way of a shared dynamic.
—Publishers Weekly

Caregivers, educators, and librarians can use this story to discuss the power of friendships and to encourage readers to see the beauty in their fears. An ethereal and dreamy picture book that tells the story of friendship and conquering fears.
—School Library Journal

Relying on straightforward prose, LaRocca eases her characters into a mutual acceptance of their opposite worlds, luring along child readers who may be grappling with similar anxieties. Aiding her in this endeavor are Derby’s evocative watercolors and pastels… . Common fears stand no chance against this reassuring tale with its visual explosions of color.
