Russ Manning
Archie Goodwin (d. 1998) began his career as both a writer and artist in comic strips and cartoons before transitioning to Warren Publishing’s Vampirella. He later moved to Marvel Comics, where he eventually succeeded Gerry Conway as editor-in-chief. Goodwin is credited with helping to save Marvel from financial difficulties by securing adaptation rights to the Star Wars franchise, recognizing its potential early on. He also wrote comic-book adaptations of films such as Alien and Blade Runner.
Goodwin created Marvel’s Graphic Novel line and its Epic Comics imprint. As an editor at Epic Comics, he occasionally appeared in caricature as aliens, elves, and other characters. He also edited early English translations of the Akira series and the works of Moebius. At DC Comics, he oversaw titles like Batman and Starman. One of his notable works was his collaboration with Walter Simonson on the “Manhunter” backup feature in Detective Comics, which garnered five Shazam Awards.
Alfredo Alcala (1925-2000) achieved recognition in the Philippines’ comic-book industry with his 1963 series Voltar. After working for DC Comics and Warren Publishing, he joined Marvel Comics, where he illustrated runs of Conan the Barbarian, Star Wars, and other licensed titles. Following a successful period in film animation and novel illustration, Alcala returned to comics in the 1990s, contributing to various genres.
