A Reflective Narrative on Growing Up as a Girl
Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2026
Format: Kindle
When Sherry Lynn opened this narrative in describing the first time her mother made her mindful of her weight and began monitoring it, I knew that I met a writer that understood my own childhood as a chubby girl. From the deserted lands of Arizona listening to Bad Girls by Donna Summers, one of my mom’s favorite songs, Lynn’s memoir Chosen: Childhood of Trust shows an author that sees a new light into the beautiful and complicated situations that a lot of young women deserve to hear more about. I really appreciated Lynn’s usage of show, don’t tell through a lot of the subtle actions of characters, such as her mother’s indication of her attitude shift through her lips becoming tense, or even her father’s endearing name for her as his pretty baby. I also appreciated that she allows the background characters to show up in the page in their authentic selves and she takes the time to see her life through their eyes and her interactions between them. It’s been a long time since I’ve read a memoir where someone could relate to one of my insecurities in childhood with my weight and as soon as Lynn mentioned these awkward moments, I could feel tears welling up in my eyes because someone knew the scrunity of constantly monitoring my weight and the awakening of how aware you become about your body once puberty arrives. I am really happy that I got the chance to read this narrative and look forward to more of Lynn’s experiences in future books as she has now become an author that relates to me and knows some of my own stories as well. Highly recommend this memoir, especially for the young girl in your life that wants to understand the beauty and pain of becoming a woman.

This book is amazing because Sherry does a great job capturing the tender weight of what it means to be a “miracle child.” I found her description of the final adoption hearing so beautiful, and how Velma says that she is already theirs.
As Sherry grows up, her mother’s strict rules around food, perfection, and physical appearance begin to shape her inner world, highlighting the burden of living up to an ideal.
I think the ending of Chapter Six, where she details her painful breakup with Kevin on Halloween 1980, was heartbreaking. Rather than an explosive fight, it is marked by a quiet, devastating finality.
It’s a book that I enjoyed because of its beautiful prose that shows how empowering it is to step into your own choices.
Sherry Lynn
Sherry Lynn is the author of the Chosen memoir series, an honest, often humorous, and sometimes heartbreaking journey through family, love, marriage, motherhood, work, loss, and the choices that shape a lifetime.
Born in Arizona and adopted as an infant, Sherry grew up knowing she had been “chosen”—a word filled with love, but also with expectations she wouldn’t fully understand until much later.
Her story doesn’t end with childhood. Chosen follows her through the wonderfully messy business of growing up: first loves, heartbreaks, marriages, motherhood, careers, spectacularly bad decisions, unexpected second chances, and more than a few moments that prove real life can be considerably stranger than fiction.
Sherry writes the way she remembers life—without pretending it was prettier, simpler, or more sensible than it really was. She isn’t afraid to laugh at herself, admit when she got it wrong, or revisit the moments that still hurt.
At its heart, Chosen is about more than what happened to one woman. It’s about becoming who you are after life has repeatedly rewritten the plan.
