Steven Caras
Steven Caras was born and raised in Northern New Jersey, where he began studying ballet at the age of fifteen. Three years later, he was invited to join the New York City Ballet by its founder, the legendary George Balanchine.
Over the next fourteen years, Caras worked diligently under the watchful eye of “Mr. B,” dancing worldwide in numerous masterworks choreographed by Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. Noticing Caras’s deep respect for his talented colleagues and his inseparable bond with his Olympus camera, Balanchine granted him unprecedented access to document all facets of company life.
Balanchine’s encouragement fostered a remarkable second career for Caras as a highly respected dance photographer. For over four decades, his work has been featured internationally in prominent publications, films, documentaries, exhibitions, and private collections.
