The Psalms

[A] wide-ranging and fascinating book… Gillingham takes us through this extraordinary collection with a rare blend of scholarship and sensitivity to the human dimension of the poems… An unusual and refreshing resource – genuinely a “companion”, not just a commentary, and a rich and rewarding introduction to a set of texts that show little sign of losing their relevance. – Rowan Williams * The Observer *
If you want to find a good place to start reading the Old Testament, then I suggest that you turn to the Psalms, with Susan Gillingham’s excellent commentary open before you … [A] remarkable book … The translations are always readings that are deeply respectful of the poetic quality of the original, and how they might sound in our contemporary world … This is a book not to be missed * The Tablet *
