Role: Nurse practitioner, nurse scientist, and Specialty Director of Palliative Care at Duke University School of Nursing.

Research Focus: Ameliorating symptoms and distress to improve patient-reported health outcomes in adults with cancer, particularly hematologic malignancies. Her research also explores the impact of cancer diagnosis on families. She collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to advance symptom science and improve outcomes for adults with cancer and their families.

Vanessa Battista, DNP, MBA, CPNP-PC, CHPPN, FPCN, FAAN

Role: Board-certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) and Senior Nursing Director of Palliative Care at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

Responsibilities: Oversees clinical operations and practice for the inpatient and outpatient adult and pediatric palliative care nursing team. Works with an interprofessional leadership team to ensure high-quality palliative care delivery throughout the Institute, with a focus on nursing education.

Other Activities: Lectures and teaches at local, national, and international levels. Member of the ELNEC pediatric faculty.

Heather Coats, PhD, APRN-BC, FAAN, FPCN

Role: Palliative care nurse practitioner, researcher, administrator, clinician, and educator.

Current Positions: Director of Research for Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA) and Associate Professor at the University of Colorado, College of Nursing, Anschutz Medical Campus.

Experience: Over 28 years of experience in palliative, oncology, and hospice care.

Research Focus: Investigates the use of person-centered narrative interventions to improve communication between patients, their identified care partners, and their clinicians. Her research has been funded by the NIH and the Cambia Health Foundation.

Accolades: Recipient of the 2021 HPNA Vanguard award, Fellow in Palliative Care Nursing, and Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. Represents HPNA on the NASEM Roundtable on Quality Care for People with Serious Illness.

Abraham A. Brody, PhD, RN, FAAN, FPCN

Role: Palliative and geriatric nurse practitioner.

Focus Areas: Improving the quality of care and quality of life for seriously ill individuals across various settings. His research and implementation work centers on geriatrics, palliative care, quality, and equity.

Research & Implementation: Develops interventions tailored for diverse and underserved older adults with serious illness and their caregivers, designed for real-world implementation and tested in large multi-site clinical trials. Leverages emerging technologies like precision health and machine learning to support the interdisciplinary healthcare workforce.

Key Development: Developed the Aliviado Health Program, which aids care delivery organizations in providing evidence-based geriatric palliative care to individuals living with dementia and their caregivers. This program has been disseminated to numerous hospices, home care agencies, telephonic care programs, and case management settings, impacting the care of over 50,000 individuals.
