Tim Powers
Tim Powers is a two-time winner of the World Fantasy Award for his novels Last Call and Declare. His novel Declare also received the International Horror Guild Award. On Stranger Tides, another of his novels, inspired the Monkey Island video game series and was adapted into the film Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
Powers’s book The Anubis Gates earned him the Philip K. Dick Award and is recognized as a seminal work in science fiction and a progenitor of the steampunk genre. He later won the Philip K. Dick Award for a second time for his post-apocalyptic science fiction novel Dinner at Deviant’s Palace.
Many of Powers’s works, including Last Call and Alternate Routes, are classified as “secret histories.” These novels weave supernatural and metaphysical elements into real historical events, creating unique and captivating narratives.
Having grown up in Southern California, Powers studied English at Cal State Fullerton. There, he formed collaborations with James Blaylock and K.W. Jeter, and also befriended the acclaimed science fiction author Philip K. Dick, who became a significant mentor.
Powers, a practicing Catholic, believes that stories are more impactful and authentically convey a writer’s convictions when they emerge organically from the subconscious rather than being consciously directed. He focuses on his plots, leaving the thematic development to his subconscious. Tim Powers continues to live in Southern California with his wife, Serena.
