About The Author

Tomie dePaola

Tomie dePaola was born in Meriden, Connecticut, in 1934, to a family of Irish and Italian background. From a young age, he knew his life’s work would be creating books for children. His dedication led him to earn a BFA from Pratt Institute and an MFA from the California College of Arts & Crafts.

He worked as a teacher, designed greeting cards and stage sets, and painted church murals before illustrating his first children’s book, Sound, in 1965. Eventually, he dedicated himself full-time to writing and illustrating children’s books.

DePaola cites Fra Angelico, Giotto, Georges Rouault, and Ben Shahn as significant influences, but he developed a distinctive style characterized by unique use of color, line, detail, and design. His work has garnered numerous prestigious awards, including a Caldecott Honor Award for Strega Nona, the Smithsonian Medal, the Kerlan Award, the Catholic Library Association’s Regina Medal, and the University of Southern Mississippi Medallion. He was also the United States nominee for the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for illustration in 1990.

With nearly 200 children’s books published in fifteen countries, Tomie dePaola remains a highly popular creator, receiving over 100,000 fan letters annually.

He resided in New Hampshire with his four dogs, working from a studio in a renovated 200-year-old barn.
