Remembering Lord Jeffrey Archer: Storyteller, Politician & Bestselling Author Dies Aged 86
Jeffrey Archer knew how to keep readers turning the pages. Across five decades, his novels followed fortunes made and lost, family loyalties tested and rivalries that lasted a lifetime.
The bestselling British author and former politician died at home on 5 October 2026, aged 86. HarperCollins said he died “suddenly and peacefully”, between writing sessions. His final novel, Adam & Eve, was published the following day.
For many readers, Archer’s name will always be associated with Kane and Abel. Published in 1979, the novel follows two men born into very different circumstances whose ambitions bring them into bitter conflict. Its combination of family history, rivalry and carefully timed twists became a hallmark of his writing.
His first novel, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less, appeared in 1976 after a failed investment had brought him close to financial ruin. The story of four men trying to recover their money from a con artist launched a writing career that would reach readers around the world.
Archer later returned to the scope of the family saga with the Clifton Chronicles, while his William Warwick novels followed the career of a British police officer. Across these books, he kept coming back to questions of ambition, loyalty and what people are prepared to risk to get ahead.
His public life was more troubled. A former Conservative MP and deputy chairman of the party, Archer was convicted of perjury in 2001 and served time in prison. He wrote about that experience in the three volumes of A Prison Diary.
Through the successes and controversies, his readership endured. According to HarperCollins, his books sold more than 300 million copies across a career spanning half a century.
Adam & Eve was a farewell he had already planned. Beginning on Armistice Day in 1918, it follows two children born on the same English estate: an earl’s daughter and a shepherd’s son. Their lives unfold against the divisions of class and the approach of another war. Archer described it as “the most satisfying thing I have ever written”.
He is survived by his wife, Dame Mary Archer, their two sons and five grandchildren.
Readers will have their own Archer book they remember best: a well-worn copy of Kane and Abel, a favourite short story, or a series they followed over several years. His books offered the pleasure of becoming caught up in someone else’s life, eager to find out what happened next.
