Dolly Parton: A True Champion of Literacy

Author:  Stacey Collins

A global icon whose legacy put books in the hands of children around the world.

As the world reflects on the extraordinary life and legacy of musical icon Dolly Parton, her music is only part of what we celebrate. What made Dolly so uniquely wonderful wasn't just her record-breaking career or legendary talent - it was her heart. She could have simply enjoyed her wealth and fame, but instead, she chose to give back, changing the lives of millions of children through the simple, transformative power of reading.

Driven by her deep roots, Parton built a legacy that put books directly into the hands of young readers around the globe. Growing up in rural East Tennessee, Dolly watched her father, Avlee Parton, navigate life without ever having learned to read or write. Deeply inspired by his strength and determined to make a difference, she launched **Dolly Parton's Imagination Library** in 1995. Her mission was clear: ensure that every child, regardless of income, grows up with books in their home.

What started as a small local initiative in Sevier County, Tennessee, soon blossomed into a global movement. Today, the program spans the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland. Since its inception, the Imagination Library has gifted over 300 million free books to children worldwide.

Here's to Dolly Parton - a global icon, a legendary artist, and forever a true champion of literacy.
